Obituary for Gerald Lee Sowder

Gerald Lee Sowder (73) of Independence, KY passed away peacefully at his home on April 22, 2022. Gerald was born on May 30, 1948, in Cincinnati, OH. Beloved son of the late Reverend James and Bessie Sowder.

Gerald is survived by his wife Vicki (Bonar) Sowder of 49 years 11 months. He is survived by brothers Terry (Joy) Sowder, Falmouth, KY and James (Sandy) Sowder, Cincinnati, OH. He has many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family and a special beloved friend Anita Clary that will miss him. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Independence, KY. Gerald retired from Cincinnati Bell in 2008 with 38 years of service. Gerald also served his country in the U.S. Army. He served a tour in Vietnam 1969-1970 with the 2nd 60th 9th Infantry Division Delta Company 3rd Platoon. He was the Radio Telephone Operator (RTO). His Platoon still meets together and he enjoyed getting together with his Army buddies. They share a bond and a friendship that is amazing even after 52 years of serving together.

Preceded in death by his son, Michael Lee Sowder in 2020. His parents Rev. James and Bessie Sowder and his mother and father-in law Harry and Doris Bonar.

Gerald was ordained a Deacon in 1975 at Highland Heights Baptist Church. Since that time, he has served actively at Highland Heights Baptist, Pleasant Ridge Baptist, Cold Spring Baptist, Hickory Grove Baptist and Oak Ridge Baptist serving our Lord and Savior. Gerald loved to sing, and he sang in every church choir where he was a member.

Visitation will be held 11am-1pm Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Peoples Funeral Home in Butler. Funeral service will follow at 1pm, also at the funeral home. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be laid to rest next to his son at Fryer Family Cemetery (Pleasant Hill Cemetery) in Pendleton County with full military honors.
