Obituary for Wilma Joy Harris (Smith)

Wilma Joy Harris, 80, of Butler, passed away on May 19, 2023, at her home. Born on March 4, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Ourka Combs Smith.

Wilma, known by “Nana” to most people, was born in Sassafras, Kentucky but spent much of her schooling in Pendleton County, graduating as the second class from Pendleton County High School in 1961. She met and married the love of her life, fellow Pendleton Countian Kenneth Harris who asked her to marry him on their very first date! She declined but was soon won over by the man who treated her as a princess and referred to her as Honeydew.

Wilma and her children followed Ken to Dry Ridge, then Douglasville, Georgia. They lived in Douglasville until Ken’s death in 2006. Wilma, her daughter Tina and sons, relocated to Pendleton County. In Douglasville, Wilma was active in her oldest grandkids’ lives, and travelling with her husband. They especially enjoyed going to the Outer Banks with their son Daryle and his family and on cruises with her brother Paul and sister-in-law Janice. Wilma was also an accomplished Bridge player, enjoying playing online and in-person. She was a fantastic cook and loved cooking for her family. Wilma was a fun Nana, playing games at every family get together, from the board game Scotland Yard to the Wii game Guitar Hero and everything in between. She was adored by her family and will greatly be missed.

Besides her parents and husband, Wilma was preceded in death by mother and father-in-law Frank (Anna) Harris, sisters Glenna Valentine and Antoinet Reynolds, and brothers Paul, Palmer, and Carvel Smith, and family friend Tony Hodgson.

Survivors include her son Daryle Wayne (Nila) Harris, daughter Tina Marie James, grandsons Christopher Everett James, David Wayne James, Mark Everett (Cierra) Harris, Robert Wade Harris, granddaughter Devin Marie (Phillip) Harris-Davis, great granddaughter Remington Marie Harris and great grandson Brooks Everett Harris, sister-in-law Rita (Rodney) Moore, and brother-in-law Zane (Diana) Harris and several nieces and nephews whom she loved very dearly.

Visitation will be held at Peoples Funeral Home in Butler, KY on May 27, 2023, from 10:00-1:00 with the funeral following at 1:00 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to: Cure Autism Now or the charity of your choice.
